Currently in NYC — July 31, 2024: Humid with scattered thunderstorms

The weather, currently.

Like my internet connection, the weather’s a bit unstable on Wednesday. We’ll have some rounds of scattered showers and thunderstorms throughout the day. It could be hit or miss but it’s not a bad idea to keep your umbrella handy.

We’ll have more clouds than sunshine and it’s going to feel hot outside with a high of 86°F and a Heat Index in the low 90s. Listen, it’s going to be disgustingly humid out, especially in the morning. Try to plan out when your train is coming so you’re not sweltering on the platform. Stay cool!

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
