Currently in NYC — July 16, 2024: Surprise! Another scorcher.

The weather, currently. 

Uncle! This is getting a bit silly now. We’re even hotter on Tuesday with a “how in the h-e-double hockey sticks has this not broken yet” high of 97°F. The dew point is dripping around oppressive once again and our Heat Advisory continues.  

A trick that works for me is freezing a water bottle overnight and bringing it with me on my commute. It really helps in those depths of the underground. Another trick is reminding myself that we will break this dreadful heat curse. And soon! Thursday, actually! We only have two more days of this. Be safe and stay cool!

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
