Currently in NYC — July 15, 2024: Dangerous heat to start the week

Ter•ri•ble | adjective : extremely unpleasant or disagreeable. A synonym would be Monday, July 15th. We are in a Heat Advisory until Tuesday at 10pm and that will likely be extended through Wednesday.

It will feel like the low 100s on Monday with an actual temperature of 95°F. Oof. We’re talking about dangerous heat to start this week and it will be important to stay in air conditioning whenever possible. Expect humid and partly sunny conditions with a slight chance of a thunderstorm. Please take it easy out there and stay hydrated.

What you can do, currently.

A Media Matters analysis found that last year — the hottest calendar year on record — network coverage of climate actually declined in the US. What’s worse, just 12% of reports about climate change mentioned fossil fuels as the driving cause. The media still reported on extreme weather, but stopped short of making the climate connection.

Independent climate journalism like Currently is needed more than ever. And this year, with all of these weather warnings already underway, we’ll unfortunately have plenty of opportunities to do better.
